Since starting my own business, I have been amazed at the amount of writing that is required. You have your website content – from your home page explaining your product or service to your about us page. Your webpage is just the beginning when it comes to writing as part of your internet marketing strategy. Your internet marketing includes writing blog posts, articles, tweets, forum posts and comments. For your offline marketing efforts there is the brochure, post cards, and sales letters. Writing is a constant in marketing and running a business. I guess that is why so much writing is required in college, to get you prepared! What if writing is not your thing? Or you haven’t really written anything since college? What can you do to improve your writing skills?
• Start writing – Just start to get something down on paper (or the computer). Don’t think about the structure or technicalities; simply get your ideas flowing. You can go back and fine tune later. The idea is to start, and not to get overwhelmed with being perfect. That is what editing is for. As you write more often, you will find it comes easier and your writing will improve.
• Read more – Read more books and blogs. Not only will reading help your writing, you may get some topic ideas too.
• Take a class – there are many business and creative writing classes offered at communities colleges. Many are even offered online, so you can work around your schedule.
• Join a group – being a part of a writing group helps to keep you accountable, provides valuable feedback, and allows you to fine tune your skills.
• Outsource your writing – Another option is to outsource your business writing. There are many copy writing companies out there. Plus, many virtual assistants specialize in ghost writing and copy writing. Just make sure to read everything and approve it before it is posted. You want to be sure you are being represented professionally. Also, check to be sure it hasn’t been plagiarized by using a tool like copyscape.com.
Writing is essential to every business. And it is not going anywhere! Working to improve your writing skills will really pay off. And remember, if writing isn’t where you want to focus, than outsource it. You have many options when it comes to business writing, you have to decide what is right for your business.

I just returned from a long weekend vacation and find my mind clear and energized! So yes, I think vacation is a great thing for your business. You may be thinking how can not working be a good thing? The reason is everyone needs a break! Giving yourself the chance to step away from the day to day stress of running a business re-energizes your mind and body. As business owners, we spend a lot of time and energy focusing on our business. You get wrapped up in the day to day stress, and it can be difficult to get out of that mindset. By taking a vacation, even a weekend away, you can free yourself from that stressful mindset. You open your mind to new ideas. Stepping away clears your mind and allows you to brainstorm new marketing ideas and ways to grow your business. Once you return to work you are fresh and motivated. You are ready to tackle those projects you have been avoiding or to try out that new service. Taking a vacation may be just what you need to boost your business.
